Subscribe to RSS About Me ![]() I'm an author and freelance journalist, venturing into the world of 'blogs' for the first time. Although I usually write from dreams, these are purely formed from my own opinions, observations and general silliness. If you're feeling brave, why not read a couple? Or if you want to go back to the safety of nice, familiar books, venture back to the main site. |
![]() Charity - Posted on 1/27/2009I did a recent survey about giving to charity given the current financial climate. It asked if I was inclined to give less to charity now than ever before, and it really made me think. Things don't seem to be getting better at the moment at least financially – if anything they seem to be getting worse, so what does this picture mean to people who are less privileged than ourselves? You might find your bank account running scarily low, you may even find yourself eating into your overdraft every now and then, and right now, you may consider yourself the most important charity case. But then where does that leave the ones worse off than us? Things are certainly not going to get better for them, either. What about people who don't even have a bank account? The ones who struggle to get fresh water and enough food to feed their families? The ones that starve themselves to make sure their children get a healthy meal, if they're lucky. There are a lot of people who are, more or less, unaffected by the current financial crisis the UK is facing at the moment, and some who even boast about giving to charity. But what about the rest of us? Are we giving less to charity now because of our growing money worries, and if so, who can blame us for that. I also think it means a lot more to give to charity when you have less to spend on yourself, than when you have a lot of money and barely even think about it. So I will continue to give to charity to help those more worse off than myself, even if things are getting tougher on my own wallet. I hope that stands for something, but as for what, I'm a bit unsure. I can only hope that this mentality will spread. I'm so happy that I'm part of the YouWriteOn initiative. For every copy of ‘Nightswallow' sold, 10% of the profits will go to Sightsavers charity – an even better reason to buy an extra copy for a friend or family member! Add a comment |
